fan recordings

1981-xx-xx: tuesday's children ***
an excellent sounding copy of the 1981 cassette, "tuesday's children", which was independently released by the b band, an early name for indigo girls. it is not known how many copies of the cassette were issued.
1981-11-xx: study hall ap english, shamrock high school - decatur, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding copy of the 1981 tape of a performance by amy and emily for their ap english class back at shamrock high school. this is quite possibly their first performance in front of an audience, please see this 2000 interview with emily for more info: june 2000 - queer television interview.

1982-xx-xx: amy ray - color me grey ***
a mostly excellent sounding copy of amy ray's solo effort from 1982, "color me grey". this was an independently released cassette, reportedly one year they were given away by amy ray as christmas presents to eight or so people. there are suspected to be at least two different versions of the cassette with track orders and some tracks varying between versions. this was an independent release, and it is not known how many copies/versions of the cassette were issued.
back in september of 1995 there was a lot of discussion on the ig fan list related to the release date and the track list for this cassette, a member of the list had the following to say about it (tricia are you still out there? if so, i hope it is okay that i am reproducing this):
i am slightly confused. about a week ago i had dinner with someone who has an original color me grey. after looking at it and listening to it, i realized that it is not the same color me grey that i thought i had. then i began to think about it, "well maybe the one i have just has more tracks on it." but then where would the extra tracks that i have, on my cmg, come from? so here's what i'm gonna do.. i'm gonna put 2 lists.. one of the actual cmg and one of the copy-of-a-copy-of-a-copy-etc. one that i thought was color me grey. (btw.. sidenote.. the copyright on the cmg is 1982)
i thought this was cmg - scared to say we're friends, nashville, fallin' star, carry me away, anyway i love you, clues to you, always be there, color me grey
the real cmg - just passing time, no way out, losing touch, sweet gypsy, the distance remains the same, i'll be there, slow moving sun, thursday afternoon, free through eternity, passin time, losin touch, ease the pain, anyone but myself
so, does anyone else have the cmg on the left column? i mean, it's not a huge deal, but if anyone knows where the rest of those songs are from, it'd be nice to know.
oh yeah.. here's a description of what the color me grey tape looked like:
the j-card was a picture of amy sitting under a tree, playing her guitar, with her loyal cat sitting next to her. btw, it's a black and white picture... then, when amy printed the picture, she left some white space below the picture for the song titles, etc. basically, the j-card is on photo paper, with the song titles, album tile, etc, hand-written on it. i was told that there are only 7 original cmg tapes out there.
anyway.. this may be old news, but it was new for me, so i thought i'd share.
tricia :)

1985-xx-xx: blue food, recorded at the dugout - decatur, georgia ***
an excellent sounding copy of the independent cassette release, "blue food". all tracks were recorded live in 1985 with the exception of everybody's waiting (for someone to come home), which is the same version as on the crazy game/everybody's waiting 45. it is not known how many copies of the cassette were issued.
1985-xx-xx: the dugout - decatur, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording of a fun show including covers of "up on the roof", "summer highland falls", "rock me on the water", "fire and rain", and "drift away". also includes "romeo and juliet".
1985-xx-xx: purple parrot - atlanta, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding copy of the 1985 release, "the purple parrot". this another early independent cassette released under the name indigo girls. all tracks were recorded live in 1985 at the purple parrot in atlanta, georgia. if you ever find yourself in line for a show in phoenix be sure to chat up your neighbor, as in doing so one night i met the woman who used to own the purple parrot back when amy and emily played there on a regular basis. she was incredibly nice and still very much a fan after all these years. the recording has a lot of fun cover tunes mixed in with some of the classic early songs that never seem to have made it onto any of the official major label releases. it is not known how many copies of the cassette were issued.
1985-xx-xx: the ep ***
1985-87: early 45s ***

1986-xx-xx: mysterys play rehersal ***
a really good sounding recording of rehersals, with group renditions of "holy city" and "strange fire".
198?-xx-xx: 'curse of the starving class' production ***
an excellent sounding recording with three instrumentals, including "emily's song", "beautiful guitar", and "instrumental number 3".

198?-xx-xx: little five points pub - atlanta, georgia ***
a rough sounding recording of some great songs, including "hand in hand".
1987-xx-xx: peace by tomorrow - benefit 45 ***
1987-03-20: don't eat out of dented cans - benefit lp ***
1987-04-10: haverford college - haverford, pennsylvania ***
an okay sounding recording of a really good performance that features "make this house a home", "lifeblood", and "don't give up on me baby".
1987-05-09: decatur on the square - decatur, georgia ***
pretty good sounding audio taken from a television broadcast of the show, the performance and the setlist are both terrific, "cold as ice", "never stop", "holy city", "killing time", and "make this house a home" are some of the highlights.
1987-xx-xx: strange fire (indigo records vinyl release) ***
1987-11-13: chapel hill, north carolina ***
a really good sounding recording of a great performance, includes "make it easier", "no way to treat a friend", and "hey jesus". the earliest known bootleg with "blood and fire". it appears to be around this time that amy and emily each starting playing solo songs in the middle of the set, at this show it was one each, as time went by it became two each, and in later years become an option that one or both sometimes use but most of the time don't.

1988-03-16: the white dot - atlanta, georgia ***
a neat one from back before amy and emily signed with epic records. the sound is pretty good considering its age, and highlights include many of the old standards as well as a partial version of "beauty to disaster" (it is cut part way through), a short rendition of "mandy", a rare performance of "high horse", and an early soc during "all along the watchtower". also includes the earliest known bootleg performance of "prince of darkness".
1988-03-19: arts center - carrboro, north carolina ***
a terrific early soundboard with some hiss but otherwise really good sound. the setlist speaks for itself and in between are a lot of fun stories and interactions with the audience, including their speeding ticket story leading into "cold as ice", their st patricks story leading into "lifeblood", and their radar detector/amy's lost and found again boots story leading into nashville. you get the idea, this is a really loose and fun show. also includes the earliest known bootleg recording of "center stage".
1988-04-11: the uptown lounge - athens, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording that includes john keane sitting in on some of the tracks, highlights include "the ballad of squeaky fromme", "blood and fire", "lifeblood", and "all night long".
1988-04-28: boston, massachusetts ***
this is a pretty good sounding recording for its age, a show from early in the year that would eventually see amy and emily sign with epic records. the performance and the setlist are both terrific, with amy playing "beauty to disaster" for the second time ever, as well as the only known bootleg recording of emily singing joan armatrading's "love by you".
1988-05-xx: decatur on the square - decatur, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording from an outdoor show in downtown decatur, includes an early and very fast rendition of "secure yourself", along with "the water is wide", "peace song", "house at pooh corner", and "danny's song". "up in smoke" really shines. one of the most cover heavy bootlegs.
1988-05-17: wrek - atlanta, georgia ***
a home town radio performance from before amy and emily signed with epic. the first couple minutes of "prince of darkness" don't sound so great but the rest definitely does. has some lengthy interview segments and also features a really terrific live in the studio rendition of "no way to treat a friend".
1988-xx-xx: wuog - athens, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding radio broadcast that includes studio performances mixed in with interview segments. highlights include "prince of darkness" and "center stage".
1988-06-09: kingfest - atlanta, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording from an early festival performance, includes a really nice rendition of "knockin' on heavens door" with michelle malone on vocals and sandy garfinkel on harmonica, and a great "white house blues" with sandy sitting in again.
1988-fall: perspective radio program - athens, georgia ***
not great sounding but neat, john keane (the producer of the original "strange fire") interviews amy ray.
1988-08-31: the uptown lounge - athens, georgia ***
a pretty good recording with a great setlist, including an amazing "blood and fire" and a beautiful, solo "you and me of the 10,000 wars", which is introduced as a new song. this is the earliest known bootleg recording of "10,000 wars".
1988-09-16: center stage - atlanta, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording, ann richardson adds flute to "the water is wide" and michelle malone adds vocals to "knockin' on heavens door" and "love of the common people". "left me a fool" is also really beautiful. contains the earliest known bootleg performance of "closer to fine".
1988-09-20: the uptown lounge - atlanta, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording of a good performance that includes most of the songs that would later end up on the "indigo girls" record.
1988-09-25: athens music festival (with michael stipe) - athens, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording with michael stipe and amy and emily teaming up to play the athens music festival. six months later the indigo girls first epic release would be out and they would spend three weeks opening arena shows for rem's 'green' tour. the setlist is an interesting mix of rem and indigo girls songs as well as a number of covers.
1988-10-15: the point - atlanta, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording with a long and terrific set list and guest appearances by ann richardson (flute), michelle malone, and hothouse flowers. there is a lot of chatter between the songs, including right before "no way to treat a friend" when their amp blows.
1988-10-21: little five points pub - atlanta, georgia ***
another pretty good sounding recording with a long set list, this one from the famed little five points pub, where amy and emily were regular performers in their early days. ann richardson (flute) and michelle malone both make guest appearances.
1988-12-29: center stage - atlanta, georgia ***
the sound on this one is pretty distant, emily talks about how they just got home from los angeles and recording the "indigo girls" record. emily sings with caroline aiken on two songs, including caroline's amazing "another on the rise", and emily and amy do an improptu partial and very fun version of "midnight train to georgia". michelle malone and caroline aiken both lend their vocal talents to a beautiful "finlandia".

pre-1989: studio recordings ***

1989-01-26: the uptown lounge - athens, georgia (athens music show) ***
the audio portion of a tv broadcast, the sound on this one is pretty good. features some great performances with interview segments mixed in, and a terrific setlist combining the songs from the "strange fire" era with most of the new record. a neat "all along the watchtower" complete with soc.
1989-02-18: the palladium - new york, new york (rock against fur) ***
the sound on this one is good but a little distant. a benefit performance in new york city right before the "indigo girls" record was released, you can tell the crowd is unfamiliar with their music as they don't sing michael stipe's part in "kid fears".
1989-02-21: wrek - atlanta, georgia ***
a light hearted home town radio performance from the night before "indigo girls" was first available in atlanta area record stores. the interviewer is a little out of it at times but the sound quality on this one is really terrific. features a rare performance of "half moon cafe", a beautiful rendition of "the untitled song", a solo version of "hand me downs" which amy introduces by saying it was written the night before, and a very fun run up to "love of the common people". if you only ever download one show, this would be my recommendation.
1989-03-03: 96 rock - atlanta, georgia ***
a nice sounding radio broadcast with a fun and loose mixture of in studio performances and interview segments, including three songs that would eventually be recorded for nomads*indians*saints, "hand me downs", "southland in the springtime", and "welcome me".
1989-xx-xx: radio - england ***
not great quality but listenable, a short but fun interview segment.
1989-03-17: the uptown lounge - athens, georgia ***
a pretty good sounding recording of a fun show, the record release party for "indigo girls", there were two separate crowds let into the club. this recording has songs from both the first and the second shows that night. "all along the watchtower" is a real standout, great vocals, great guitar work, and really neat flute added in. the first of two shows leading up to being the opening act for rem's "green" tour.
1989-03-23: emory university - decatur, georgia ***
an okay sounding recording of a show at amy and emily's alma mater, the first appearance of the setlist that would form the basis of the "indigo girls" tour.

a pretty good sounding recording from when the touring behind nomads*indians*saints was beginning to wind down. it is an acoustic duo show with sara lee on bass and barbara marino guesting on the saxophone, one of the last shows before a period of experimentation began with differing band lineups including simone simonton and rachel lee, which then lead up to the break before the recording of "rites of passage". to provide some additional context, this series of shows in april of 1991 came on the heels of the first gulf war. the recording includes a portion of the sound check, which has amy singing a bit of "angel from montgomery" as well as working on an early version of "jonas and ezekial" that features some different lyrics than those that would end up in official release. it also includes "no way to treat a friend", the infamous "freebird/stairway to heaven/sweet home alabama" medley, "american tune", and michael lorant and gerard mchugh guesting on "uncle john's band".
1991-04-26: williams college - williamstown, massachusetts ***
a pretty good sounding acoustic duo show with sara lee and barbara marino from the end of the nomads*indians*saints tour. this recording has a bit of the sound check, with emily working on lyrics while playing the music that later became "virginia woolf", amy continuing to work on the lyrics for "jonas and ezekial", and amy covering "cowgirl in the sand". the regular portion of the show includes "no way to treat a friend", "summertime", and michael lorant and gerard mchugh and guesting on "uncle john's band". there is also a terrific introduction to "world falls", which includes the story of sejarez.

the sound quality on this acoustic duo show is really good, during the sound check amy continues to work on the lyrics for "jonas and ezekial" and also plays a bit of "blue eyes cryin' in the rain". the regular portion of the show includes a lengthy rendition of "all along the watchtower" complete with a terrific guitar solo from emily and stream of conscious lyrics by amy that include part of "free money".

a good sounding recording of an afternoon outdoor show in central park from the "rites of passage" tour. this was the last american show before the tour headed over the europe for a month (including some shows opening for the neville brothers), and in addition to featuring the band (sara lee, jerry marotta, scarlet rivera, jane scapatoni) it has a very lighthearted feel. standouts include a fun version of "bartender's blues", a terrific "tangled up on blue" (scarlet rivera really stands out on this one), and a great rendition of "down by the river". there are also some really goofy interactions with the crowd, including amy ray clipping her nails after "crazy game".

an excellent sounding recording of a "rites of passage" show from the european leg of the tour. this is a band show with sara lee on bass, scarlet rivera on violin, jane scarpantoni on cello, and budgie on drums. the strings and drumming are featured throughout, including a really unique drum part on "let it be me" and featured strings in leu of soc lyrics on "chickenman". "tangled up in blue" is terrific, and "down by the river" was an unplanned second encore, and although there are a few dropouts in sound in places, it is a great off the cuff rendition with amy throwing in some stream of conscious lyrics towards the end. one additional note about this show - there was a fair amount of controversy in the long time fan community surrounding the rites of passage tour, with the shows growing from simple productions with amy, emily, and eventually sara lee, to fully staged productions with a full band and stage backdrops and significant light shows, the video for 'joking' shows a bit of the new look. anyway, there may be some who disagree to this day, but listening to the freshness in the arrangements and performances of these songs, all the controversy seems like more of a moot point now than ever.

in the spring of 1993, after almost a year of big stage production touring behind "rites of passage", amy and emily and their band got back to basics with the $10 tour. the venues were small clubs, tickets and t-shirts were both $10, and the first fan in line at each show got to pick the setlist from a list of songs. an introductory article on this tour can be found here: 1993: april 3 - the atlanta journal constitution. this is a really good sounding recording of one of those shows, with some truly amazing vocals throughout, including one of the all time best performances of "tangled up in blue".

the late 80s and early 90s were a really fun time to hang out in atlanta, on any given night you could chose between hearing michelle malone, kristen hall, wendy bucklew, ellen james society, and more, and if you were really lucky you might catch them sharing the stage with up to three other artists in what were then known as songwriter showcases. the shows were very loosely formatted, and the different artists would often start singing and/or playing along with each other, making for some really neat collaborations. the fall of 1993 found both amy and emily participating in on these types of shows, working on the songs that would later comprise the "swamp ophelia" record. this weeks featured show has amy sitting in with kelly hogan, cooper seay, and jan dykes, next weeks will be from a month or so later when emily sat in with some friends and performed in the same format. this is the radio broadcast of the first half of the set.

recorded a couple of days before amy and emily went into the studio to record "swamp ophelia". the show was unannouced with just a handful of fans getting advanced word through the atlanta grapevine, and luckily for us one of them brought their tape recorder. the performance was completely unplugged, no mics, no amps, no monitors, and was a dry run of sorts for many of the songs that would end up on the record. the sound quality is pretty good, especially considering the conditions.

another pretty good recording of a show from a couple of months before "despite our differences" was released. the second night of a two night stand, and the last show of the 2006 summer tour. the setlist is a great mix, and in addition to some of the songs from the upcoming record, "cold beer and remote control" and "cordova" are highlights. there is also a lot of fun back and forth talking with the crowd, including someone giving amy candy after "ozilline", the crowds debut of the "pendulum swinger" dance with the ensuing discussion after the song, and emily's supper club references throughout.
