ballet, indigos team for premiere
wendell brock - staff
saturday, april 28, 2001

the atlanta ballet and the indigo girls will collaborate on a world premiere
that will launch the company's 2001-2002 season at the fox theatre. the
project had been planned this year, but the folk-rock duo pulled out because
of the yearlong ballet musicians' strike, which was later resolved.

the 40-minute work, set for oct. 18-21, will be choreographed by margo
sappington, a new yorker who created the joffrey ballet's popular
"billboards," danced to prince music. the unnamed piece is being likened to a
rock concert because the indigos will be onstage.

"the hardest part will be trying to keep from turning myself around to see
the ballet," joked emily saliers, who with partner amy ray makes up the
indigo girls. she says the project appeals to them as a mixed-media concept.

the ballet is excited about the potential to build new audiences. "it's a
huge step for us," says executive director wallace whitworth. "it's not
something most ballet companies would do."

when the indigo girls perform at next weekend's music midtown, whitworth
said, "there's only going to be one performing arts organization out there
(with) a blow-up of their season brochure that says, 'these girls are going
to be performing with us.' "

the company needs the revenue. though artistic director john mcfall refuses
to say exactly what the company's debt is, whitworth says it has a $1 million
line of credit and "we are pretty close to maxing out." it recently trimmed
three weeks from its dancers' work year (now at 32 weeks) and cut staff
salaries by 10 percent. next season's budget --- $6 million --- has been
rolled back to the 1997-1998 level.

the rest of the lineup: "the nutcracker" (dec. 7-30), the return of michael
pink's "dracula" (feb. 7-10, 2002) and australian choreographer stanton
welch's "madame butterfly" (april 5-7). subscriptions are on sale for
$50-$160. 404-892-3303. single tickets will go on sale in august.
